Persons wishing to be married in Massachusetts must appear together in any City or Town Clerk's Office in Massachusetts to file their Marriage Intention. Marriage licenses are valid for sixty (60) days from the date the marriage intention is filed. There is a mandatory three (3) day waiting period before a marriage license can be issued. Parties unable to wait the three (3) days may apply for a waiver at a Massachusetts district or probate court, after the Marriage Intentions are filed. The license may be used in any city or town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Marriage licenses are not valid outside the State. If one of the applicants is in the
military and a resident of Massachusetts, either party can file the intention. If a person is incarcerated in a Massachusetts facility, either party can file the intention.
Effective January 28, 2005 Premarital blood tests are no longer required as of January 28, 2005.
Please contact the Town Clerk's Office as far in advance as possible so that you will not be denied a marriage license in the event you are meeting the minimum waiting requirements. Out of state residents are also encouraged to call in advance.
