Greenfield Community

Community Outreach
The Greenfield Fire Department in its continued efforts to serve the citizens of Greenfield is involved in several community outreach programs.  These programs educate and assist age groups from young children to senior citizens in fire prevention and safety topics.

S.A.F.E.- Student Awareness of Fire Education

The Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program is a state initiative to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12.

Each year the Greenfield Fire Department presents our NFPA sponsored fire safety curriculum to one hundred class rooms, both public and private, totaling approximately 2460 students. The main focus of our presentations at all age levels is E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) which includes;

having and maintaing smoke detectors
matches and lighter safety
fire and health risks associated with smoking
making home fire excape plans
get out and stay out
meeting places
using the 911 system

Greenfield Fire Department also conducts annual S.A.F.E. programs for after school programs, day care providers, nursing homes and senior centers and housing, and through safety fairs and fire station tours.

The benefits that have resulted from the state-wide S.A.F.E. program are;

Training children reduces anxiety levels so they are able to react to stressful situations
Fire, School, Health and Police Departments working together to help children survive
Firefighter as a role model
Fires, burns and deaths reduced

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation Program

The Greenfield Fire Department will install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in any single residential dwelling that meets nationally recognized target hazard audiences. These include hard of hearing or deaf, elderly, financially challenged and non English speaking families.  Greenfield Fire will provide the detectors and personnel to install the detectors. The department also offers a fire safety inspection and discusses fire safety and fire escape plans.

Juvenile Fire Setters Program

In 2004, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, children playing with matches, lighters and other heat sources caused 391 reported fires, six civilian injuries, three fire service injuries and an estimated dollar loss of nearly $831,662.

To address this problem a Juvenile Fire Setter Program was begun as a cooperative effort between Greenfield and Turners Falls fire and police departments. Other participants are the Franklin Country Juvenile Firesetter Coalition, the District Attorneys Office, State Juvenile Court Clinic and Juvenile parole officers.

The goal of this program is to address and reduce the Juvenile Firesetter problem that exists in these two communities as well as Franklin County.  The program instructs identified Juvenile Firesetters in fire education and prevention. Juveniles for the program are identified through local fire departments, police departments and state juvenile court. Statistics show that 82% of juveniles who attend a Juvenile Firesetter Intervention program do not repeat setting fires. Over the past two years 100 Franklin County juveniles have attended this program.

If you have any questions regarding this program, contact Greenfield Fire Headquarters at 413-774-4323 and ask for the Fire Prevention Division.
